Career Explorations offers students a short, intensive and engaging introduction to architecture in two two-week sessions, held virtually in Summer 2021. As high schoolers consider careers, they may not yet have been exposed to the unique blend of visual orientation, creative process, academic investigation and professional training that forms an architectural education. Students can participate in one or both sessions exploring the ideas, methods, and issues of architecture with Tulane professors and local practicing architects. Lectures, studio time, digital workshops, field trips (when not held virtually), discussions, and critiques will be supplemented by regular design exercises to be completed outside class time.

Visit the Tulane Pre-College Program website for the most updated information.

Who

The program is intended for high school students who have completed at least their sophomore year. Younger students who demonstrate maturity in their attitudes and schoolwork may also apply. High school graduates may apply as well, and presently enrolled Tulane and Newcomb students may take the course for college credit.

When

The first session “Architecture: Tactile Design” will run from June 28 to July 9, 2021. The second session “Architecture: Digital Design” will run from July 12 to July 23. Students can choose to participate in one or both sessions. Participation in the full four weeks will give students a great introduction to the full spectrum of design and making. For more information about individual sessions and to read a course description please visit the Tulane Summer Programs course page here. Class meets in the mornings from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for a lecture, film screening or a skill building demonstration. In the afternoon, studio meets from 1-3:30 p.m.

Credit

At the completion of the course, high school students who pursue a degree at Tulane University will receive 3 credit hours per session (6 total). Students who pursue a degree in Architecture at Tulane may use up to 3 credit hours toward major requirements in the Bachelor of Architecture or Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree.

Cost

Tuition per 2-week Session is $1,795 (includes materials)

Materials

All required materials for the course will be supplied by the program.

Housing

The Summer 2021 Career Explorations program will be held virtually online. In previous years, students have the opportunity to live on campus in one of Tulane’s residence halls – equipped with lounges, kitchenettes and laundry facilities. While living on campus, students will also have access to the Reily Student Recreation Center. Students enjoy the dining on campus options provided by our meal plan.

Campus Experience

Career Explorations has been previously held in person and on campus at Tulane University in New Orleans. It will be held virtually in Summer 2021. When previously held in person, students' learning and leisure activities can extend beyond the classroom and campus. New Orleans offers a vibrant array of cultural and historical sites and many recreational attractions. Group outings and activities may include baseball games, movie nights, outdoor adventures, the zoo and aquarium, bowling, swimming and more.
